Bird deterrent system - BDS Problems with seagulls on offshore helicopter landing areas and laydown areas? Guano from seagulls at offshore helidecks and installations has been a big problem. In cooperation with Animal Control, Semco Maritime has developed a solution which solves the seagull problem. For many years offshore constructions have had problems with seagulls on the helidecks and laydown areas in the North Sea. It is important that helidecks are always available for service personnel in order to minimize operating losses. When the seagulls settle on the platform throughout the summer period, they leave behind big quantities of guano and crab remains which is a problem for the service personnel and which necessitates a comprehensive cleaning work throughout each season. The helicopter risks sucking in the bird droppings and other waste which can damage the engines. Furthermore, the droppings pose a health hazard to the people working on the platforms littered with guano. Our bird deterrent system is an effective way keep away the seagulls and the system has been installed on platforms in the North Sea since 2011. #semcomaritime Before installation of BDS offshore: Seagulls frequenting the helideck in large numbers The platform would normally be green. Especially during dry season the helicopter engine can suck in guano from the seagulls into the jet engine which involves a risk of crashing. After installation of BDS offshore: The photos clearly show the difference after the system was installed. This helideck has not been cleaned since 2011.
