Otjikoto Power Plant THE PROJECT In May 2013, Semco Maritime was contracted by the mining company B2Gold for the construction of a power plant in Namibia. B2Gold is a gold producer, who is licensed to mine gold in the Otjikoto region of Namibia. 4 medium speed engines with a total capacity of 20MWe supplies the gold ore processing plant with a continuous power of minimum 12MWe. The open mine consists of two separate sites; the first pit measuring 2 kilometers in length, 400 meters in width and is 250 meters deep when completed. The mine produces up to 11 kilos of pure gold per day. THE SOLUTION Semco Maritime’s delivery consisted of a complete power plant based on heavy fuel oil. It was an EPC contract which included all fuel storage and oil treatment facilities together with all engine auxiliary equipment needed for the plant operation and all related automation and control systems. The plant interfaces the gold mine through a medium voltage system on 6.6kV level, also delivered by Semco. The generation capacity is provided by 4 12CM32 heavy fuel oil medium speed engines and 3 back-up 3516 high speed diesel engines all delivered by Caterpillar. The power plant is currently operating and has successfully met the strict performance requirements made by the customer. The performance requirements involved requirements to revolutions and tensions, as well as to the ramping rate. HIGHLIGHTS The project was completed with only one lost time accident (LTA) during the entire project period, which is a very impressive statistic. The entire project which ended with a total of 300,000 man-hours had 150 employees on site during the peak period.
