Mwanza, Nyakato Power Plant THE PROJECT In 2010, Semco Maritime signed a contract with Tanzanian utility company Tanesco for a power plant in Mwanza. In order to stabilize the power distribution in the relative weak power distribution network in Tanzania, Tanesco decided to build a power plant in Mwanza. Semco Maritime assisted Tanesco in arranging for the financing of the project. Semco Maritime worked with GIEK in Norway, which is a Norwegian export credit agency (ECA) and HSBC bank, in order to facilitate the financing of this project. THE SOLUTION Semco Maritime’s contract included the complete scope of a 60MWe power plant. The plant is based on 10 Rolls Royce engines produced in Bergen, Norway. Semco Maritime’s delivery to this project also included engine auxiliaries fuel reception and storage facilities, fuel processing facilities, power and auxiliary buildings and facilities, auxiliary steam boiler system and electrical systems in the form of Control, Low Voltage, Medium Voltage and High Voltage Substation at 220kV level. interconnection towards Tanesco. HIGHLIGHTS After successful trial operation and subsequent handing over of the Power Plant to Tanesco, commercial operation commenced in 2013. The project management and the engineering were executed in Denmark, whereas the construction of the buildings and the mechanical work was subcontracted to local contractors. The electrical work was handled by Semco Maritime itself, with the installation of it handled by local electricians.
