Time to think new In an unusual move Semco Maritime in Norway is aiming to drive down cost levels for offshore customers. Do you get “value for money”? In simplified terms this is the question Semco Maritime in Norway ask the customers, after it was decided to challenge the cost level for projects on Norwegian continental shelf early this year. The campaign “Think new” comes in the wake of a widespread cooling of the Norwegian offshore market. The recession in Norway comes after several oil companies have chosen to substantially limit investments due to a very high cost level. “We wanted to address specific potential areas where costs can be reduced and so we went about to enter into dialogue with our customers, asking them if they are getting value for money. I am pleased that a lot of companies have opened their doors to us, and we are having really rewarding discussions at the moment” says Kristian Ravn, Managing Director in Semco Maritime Norway. The costs are too high He points out, that during the later years the market in Norway has grown accustomed to a very high cost level. But Kristian Ravn believes that in many cases, the price doesn’t reflect the real value of the work that is being done. “In many cases there are too many layers in the value chain. When many parties try to earn money from each other’s work, the cost level will inevitably rise. What we are saying is that by executing certain types of projects in a different manner, it is possible to drive costs down significantly” Kristian Ravn explains. “We try to challenge conventional thinking by assessing the number of employees on any given project – or by pointing out work or processes that don’t add value to the project” says Kristian Ravn. A competent partner The campaign is a strategic investment from Semco Maritime, in thread with the meticulous focus on costs: “Working with us means working with an efficient partner through an integrated team. This reflects the way we put our teams together – with people who possess the right skills. And – most important – not more people than absolutely necessary” says Kristian Ravn. TIME TO THINK NEW 3
